I have given a good few examples of symmetry pairs above.
One that I’d like to propose, in respect of the subject matter of this blog, is possible and impossible.
In previous Sections I stated that, as we observe the efforts made to reduce crime, we have a fair bit of evidence to show that it is considered by the Pillars to be an impossible problem to solve. In our work it is easy to be overwhelmed if we only think about what’s impossible, and not focus on the possibilities.
Now consider two other related symmetric pairs, dangerous and safe, and comfort and discomfort.
I believe that all risk causes discomfort, but it should not involve danger! No risk, however, is (probably always) safe and comfortable.
But is it – really?
Without risk, nothing worthwhile will ever be achieved, so actually no-risk increases the overall level of danger while, perhaps, inducing a kind of temporary comfort and safety.
In respect of symmetry, most solutions in nature are beautiful in their simplicity. And in planning and design, the beauty and elegance that comes from symmetry is as important in child protection or family support as it is in any natural process of growth, or any other human endeavour such as engineering, architecture, music or art.
This symmetry is manifest in relationship.
And it is noticed by people who look for help with aspects of their lives where they have suffered the negative effects of asymmetry for many years. It attracts them to the person centred way of working, making it easy for them and in particular safe for them to trust and ultimately believe in themselves.
As an added bonus, it enables us to feel satisfied, as practitioners, at a deep level that the way we work is elegant, pleasing to the senses, and conserving of energy. In tandem with this, the element of resonance facilitates the establishment (and continuation) of a very satisfying field of understanding between the person in distress and the worker where the transfer of energy is maximised.
The first Chapter in Section Five (Practical Applications) is entitled Cultural Matching which will offer practical applications of Symmetry and Resonance.
